Vowel Rules and Sound Blending - Video
Demonstrations
The following videos demonstrate how to develop recognition of vowel rules
and develop sound blending skills. Review
the materials to understand the process. Since this is the first
attempt of video posting to YouTube, some of the video and sound may be a few
seconds out of sync. But the focus in on seeing the process.
A native QuickTime or Media Player link may also be available, but download time
may range from 5 - 15 minutes with a high speed connection.
One of the key concepts for My Breakfast
Reading Program is the identification of vowels in a word and
applying the "1" or "2" rule. The "1" or "2" rule applies
to 70% of single syllable words. Since pancakes are cooked
on side at a time, the program relates words with one vowel to
short or pancake words. Since waffles are cooked two sides
at a time, the program relates words with two vowels to long or
waffle words. (Two vowel diphthongs are taught later and
use fruit analogies).
The first set of videos relate to
identification of vowels, their rule and their sound.
The second set of videos introduces the
skill of sound blending.
Identification of vowels,
their rules and their sound.
This video shows a class activity of just
identifying how many vowels are in a word. You would use
Worksheet #3 and/or #4 with an individual, small group or a
class as in this example.
This video shows the use of dominoes to
demonstrate, through manipulative materials, how to sound blend words with
short vowels by substituting beginning sounds.
This video illustrates how a 15 second timing can
be used to practice a skill and race against a previous practice
session. These can be called sprints.
