Research shows that a heavy reliance on silent reading during the early learning process does not show rapid growth. 

Printable materials reinforce the concept and skill that learning to read needs to be an active verbally expressive activity, not a passive listening exercise.  That is, the student must say the sounds or words!

Therefore the multimedia and/or interactive materials, if used alone, may become more of a passive listening exercise.  The student must verbalize along with the materials.
